New Delhi, April 16: Some researchers have claimed to have discovered a brain chemical that may influence our judgments. The chemical is named as serotonin, which is said to play a vital role in judging human mood or situations differently.
The reports suggested that if the serotonin level is high, people are more likely to be positive to judge different mood, especially romantic situations. IANS, the leading news agency from Asia, wrote that serotonin is mainly involved in mood regulation; control of basic activities such as eating, sleep and arousal; and control of pain. It also plays a role in memory formation. Oxford University professor Robert Rogers, who led the research, reports the journal 'Biological Psychiatry' said, "We wanted to see whether serotonin activity influences the judgments we make about peoples' close personal relationships."
The role of serotonin in encouraging different judgments was researched among a group of volunteers, who were given amino-acid drinks that manipulate blood concentrations of the amino-acid tryptophan. Tryptophan is believed to be a vital ingredient in serotonin synthesis. The research was published in 'Biological Psychiatry', the official journal of the Society of Biological Psychiatry.
