New Delhi: A recent study carried out by researchers at Brown University has found that people suffering with panic disorder show gradual increase in symptoms over succeeding months, rather than spike immediately after certain kinds of stressful life events.

The study assessed 418 adults, registered in the Harvard/Brown Anxiety Research Project (HARP) between 1998 and 2004, suffering with panic disorder or panic disorder with agoraphobia and were asked to answer in details all standardized questions about significant events in their lives and levels of anxiety seen during the events.

Ethan Moitra, lead author and a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University said, "We definitely expected the symptoms to get worse over time, but we also thought the symptoms would get worse right away."

The study was published in advance in the 'Journal of Affective Disorders'. It further reported that panic symptoms did not appear to rise before an stressful life event, even if they were known, like a divorce turning out to be official.
